Our favourite talented home girl Lupita Nyong'o is still at the top of her game. The latest is that the Kenyan Academy winner will star in an upcoming Ugandan movie titled, ' Queen of Katwe', a film directed by renowned filmmaker Mira Nair in which she will play a Ugandan chess protégée.
The film is based on the real life story of Ugandan chess protégée Phiona Mutesi whose life story was immortalised in the book The Queen of Katwe: A Story of Life, Chess, and One Extraordinary Girl's Dream of Becoming a Grandmaster by Tim Crothers.
In her interview with Katie Couric from Yahoo News, the 12 Years A Slave actress said, "When I was an undergrad I was planning to focus on him."
"I was home for the summer and I was talking to my parents about my interest in film, and my dad said, ‘You know what? I have a friend who’s married to a director.’ I said, ‘Who?’ and he said, ‘her name is Mira Nair.’ I was like, ‘Daddy… Mira Nair is a big deal. How could you not have told me that you have connections with Mira Nair?" she concluded.
The way I see it, I hope Lupita's participation in a role that depicts a Ugandan story fosters a great deal of impact on the East African country's filmmaking scene. And while at it, creating more room for growth.
