The sadly underrated and oft-maligned Johannesburg Inner City
will showcase its renaissance and hidden beauty with the Joburg City Fest. An
initiative of the Joburg City Tourism Association, a voluntary group of
organisations and companies committed to growing the inner city’s tourism
prospects, this, the second annual City Fest, aims to introduce residents and
visitors to “the sights, the sounds, the tastes, the flavours the colours” of
Joburg City.

Sponsored by Absa, this year’s festival call to action is
“Go to Town!” and invites people to become tourists in their own city. “We fly
all over the world in search of cosmopolitan experiences, like outdoor markets,
roof-top bars and side-street cafes. But, they are on our doorstep! All we need
to do is step-out of our comfort zones and rediscover the city we call home,”
says Gerald Garner, the Festival spokesperson.
The Festival will be held over four days from 02 to 05
October 2014 and will encompass a celebration of various art forms in the nine
core city districts of Newtown, Maboneng, Braamfontein, Ellis Park, Constitution
Hill, Milpark, Fashion District, Ferreirastown and Marshalltown. Popular
artists including comedian Loyiso Gola and musicians Busiswa, Johnny Clegg and
Professor. There will be fashion shows, art exhibitions, ballet recitals, a
film festival and even a rugby match at Ellis Park Stadium, complete with Fan
Walk.
