Here's what LCA had to say:
Loin Cloth and Ashes goes retro at Cape Town Fashion Week
Johannesburg, South Africa (01 August 2013) – Loin Cloth and Ashes has a visual treat fit for the lovers of frocks and threads, just as the bevy of models, fashion media, bloggers and fashionistas descend upon the Mother City for this year’s Mercedes-Benz Cape Town Fashion Week.
On August 10, Anisa Mpungwe of Loin Cloth and Ashes will show a collection she describes as “street, fun and cool.I think the LCA girl who is secretly a tomboy, will enjoy this collection,” which is a new experiment for the LCA brand as they are often known for their sophisticated, urban, chic African aesthetic.
“For this collection, I drew inspiration from watching a lot of kitsch 90s and music videos. I felt that LCA needed a bit of street and I also liked the youth street style of that time and the big sportswear influence where showing off the body wasn’t as big as being cool. This is also depicted in the music chosen for our show,” says Mpungwe.
In telling the story of her LCA Retro girl, Mpungwe employed Kitenge and Kente prints, fusing her design dexterity and out-of-the box thinking to show case the many ways in which tradition meets modernity.
“I have also decided to start with floor length hem lines, which gradually rise to mini-skirts towards the end of the story. This collection refuses to be body conscious and is all about comfort. There are plenty of weekend pieces to suit the mid-season brief. I have also chosen to do a lot of separates, to help the LCA girl accommodate an already existing wardrobe,” adds Mpungwe.
To help with the punctuation and telling of the story of the LCA Retro girl, Mpungwe has collaborated with Aldo Shoes and Puchlik by Katherine-Mary Pichulik for jewellery.
The LCA show at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is produced by Umzingeli Productions, which is headed by the renowned show producer Jan Malan and the famed Dino Bravo will create the soundtrack.
