How are you celebrating Heritage Day?
Known
as “Braai Day”, this special holiday encourages South Africans to celebrate
their culture, diversity of their beliefs and their traditions; as many
cultures make up South Africa’s population.
Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was made
the National Spokesperson for “Braai Day” in 2007 and was quoted in an
interview saying: “We are going to have this wonderful thing on the 24th
of this month, where we all gather round one fire. It’s a fantastic thing, a
very simple idea. Irrespective of your politics, of your culture, of your race,
of your whatever, hierdie ding doen ons saam [this thing we’ll do together]
just South Africans doing one thing together, and recognizing we are a
fantastic nation.”
With many South Africans taking to their
braai’s all over the country it is overwhelming to think that such a simple
appliance can bring an entire nation together. Whether it is a state of the art
gas braai or one you have made yourself out of a good old drum barrel the power
it holds is immense!
However you are celebrating, while lighting
up your braai or cooking your dinner take a moment to think about your amazing
nation (and how lucky you are to have a day off to have a braai!)
